چکیده

Nonlinear resonant magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are studied in weakly dissipative isotropic plasmas in cylindrical geometry. This geometry is suitable and is needed when one intends to study resonant MHD waves in magnetic flux tubes (e.g. for sunspots, coronal loops, solar plumes, solar wind, the magnetosphere, etc.) The resonant behaviour of slow MHD waves is confined in a narrow dissipative layer. Using the method of simplified matched asymptotic expansions inside and outside of the narrow dissipative layer, we generalise the so-called connection formulae obtained in linear MHD for the Eulerian perturbation of the total pressure and for the normal component of the velocity. These connection formulae for resonant MHD waves across the dissipative layer play a similar role as the well-known Rankine-Hugoniot relations connecting solutions at both sides of MHD shock waves. The key results are the nonlinear connection formulae found in dissipative cylindrical MHD which are an important extension of their counterparts obtained in linear ideal MHD (Sakurai et al., 1991), linear dissipative MHD (Goossens et al., 1995; Erdélyi, 1997) and in nonlinear dissipative MHD derived in slab geometry (Ruderman et al., 1997). These generalised connection formulae enable us to connect solutions obtained at both sides of the dissipative layer without solving the MHD equations in the dissipative layer possibly saving a considerable amount of CPU-time when solving the full nonlinear resonant MHD problem.

Resonant absorption in dissipative flux tubes

We study the resonant absorption of MHD waves in magnetized flux tubes with a radial density inhomogeneity. Within the approximation that resistive and viscous processes are operative in thin layers surrounding the singularities of the MHD equations, we give the full spectrum of the eigenfrequencies and damping rates of the MHD quasi modes of the tube. Both surface and body modes are analyzed.

On the validity of nonlinear Alfvén resonance in space plasmas

Aims. In the approximation of linear dissipative magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) it can be shown that driven MHD waves in magnetic plasmas with high Reynolds number exhibit a near resonant behaviour if the frequency of the wave becomes equal to the local Alfvén (or slow) frequency of a magnetic surface. This near resonant behaviour is confined to a thin region, known as the dissipative layer, which ...

Continuous magnetohydrodynamic spectra of two-dimensional coronal magnetostatic flux tubes

In this paper we derive the equations for the continuous ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) spectrum of twodimensional coronal loops, including gravity and expansion, in general curvilinear coordinates. The equations clearly show the coupling between Alfvén and slow magnetosonic continuum waves when both pressure and geodesic curvature of the magnetic field lines are present. Gravity always gives ...

On the nature of kink MHD waves in magnetic flux tubes

Context. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are often reported in the solar atmosphere and usually classified as slow, fast, or Alfvén. The possibility that these waves have mixed properties is often ignored. Aims. The goal of this work is to study and determine the nature of MHD kink waves. Methods. This is done by calculating the frequency, the damping rate and the eigenfunctions of MHD kink wav...

Nonlinear Mhd Simulations of Wave Dissipation in Flux Tubes

The phase-mixing and resonant dissipation of Alfv en waves is studied in both thèclosed' magnetic loops and thèopen' coronal holes observed in the hot solar corona. The resulting energy transfer from large to small length scales contributes to the heating of these magnetic structures. The nonlinear simulations show that the periodically varying shear ows that occur in the resonant layers are un...
